A 25-member delegation of Liberation War Fighters of Bangladesh met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati on last evening. Welcoming the Muktijoddhas, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed happiness at their three-day long visit to Guwahati and Shillong organised by the High Commission of India and the Ministry of Act East Policy Affairs, Government of Assam. The visit is part of the 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' and 'Swarnim Vijay Varsh' celebrations to mark 75 years of India’s Independence and 50 years of the Liberation of Bangladesh. Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Himant Biswa Sarma said that the Bangladesh Liberation War was a landmark event where nine valiant soldiers from Assam made the supreme sacrifice. Some Assam Police officers had also trained the 'Mukti Bahini' members during the 1971 liberation war. The Chief Minister recalled that the civil society of Assam had come forward to help the refugees who came from the then East Pakistan, now Bangladesh. Chief Minister Sarma praised Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her determination to fight terrorim and extremism which helped in ensuring peace both inside and outside Bangladesh. He said that the tough action against ULFA inside Bangladesh helped Assam to become peaceful. The Chief Minister expressed his happiness on receiving an invitation from Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. A. K. Abdul Momen for visiting the country. He said, he will make sincere efforts to honour the invitation to give further push to the civilisational ties between India and Bangladesh. Inviting Chief Minister Sarma to Bangladesh, Foreign Minister Dr. Momen called upon the north eastern states of India to reap the benefits of rapid economic development in Bangladesh. Bangladesh Foreign Minister had visited Guwahati between 28th and 29th of May to take part in the third conference of Natural Allies in Development and Interdependence (NADI-3).
