India was the first country to recognize Bangladesh as a separate and independent country and established diplomatic relations with the country immediately after its independence in December 1971. The relationship between India and Bangladesh is anchored in history, culture, language and shared values of secularism, democracy, and countless other commonalities between the two countries. It is based on sovereignty, equality, trust, understanding and a win-win partnership that goes far beyond a strategic partnership. In the last couple of years, the relationship has been further strengthened including through cooperation in new and high-technology areas.
With the onset of economic liberalization in South Asia, India & Bangladesh forged greater bilateral engagement and trade. They are close strategic partners in counter-terrorism. They are also the largest trading partners in South Asia.

High Commissioner Pranay Verma inaugurated the HCI Library at the Indian Cultural Centre, Gulshan Avenue, Dhaka on 25 May 2025.
During the event, High Commissioner paid floral tribute to poet Kazi Nazrul Islam on the occasion of his 127th birth anniversary. He noted that the poems of Kazi Nazrul Islam will remain etched in the collective memory of both India and Bangladesh.
High Commissioner expressed hope that the HCI Library would continue to serve as a welcoming space for all who believe in the enduring power of books and ideas.
The HCI Library, one of the oldest libraries in independent Bangladesh, has long served as a window for the dissemination of knowledge and information on Indian art, culture, economy, literature, history, politics, and other fields. The newly opened HCI library houses a rich collection of books in English, Hindi, and Bengali.
The library will remain open to members from Sunday to Thursday, between 9:00 AM and 5:30 PM. Bharat Bichitra (monthly magazine), published by HCI Dhaka, will also be available to library members.
The event concluded with a cultural performance featuring musical renditions of Nazrul songs by Bangladeshi singer Avijit Kundu.
Film “Manusher Bagan”, directed by Nurul Alam Atique, was awarded the Best Feature Film on Social Subject Award at 15th Delhi International Film Festival, on 19 May 2026, in New Delhi.
On behalf of the Film's director and the film team, Preeti Rahman, Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner to India, received the award at the Post Closing Award Ceremony at Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts.
This was yet another international recognition for the burgeoning contemporary filmmakers' community from Bangladesh. For over a decade, a generation of young film makers have been creating buzz at Film Festivals | circuits in Cannes, Busan, Toronto, Rotterdam et al with their unique storytelling.
Acting High Commissioner (AHC) Pawankumar Badhe addressed a gathering to mark birth anniversaries of eminent poets Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam on 14 May 2026 at Bangladesh National Museum. The event was organized by Itihash O Oitijjo Parishad in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi Culture Centre (IGCC) Dhaka, Cultural school Tapoban, Nrityanchal and bahumatrik.com.
Speaking at the event, AHC Pawankumar Badhe said that the two extraordinary poets live equally and profoundly in the hearts of the people of both India and Bangladesh. AHC highlighted that the enduring love and reverence shown towards Tagore and Nazrul remain among the strongest symbols of our shared cultural heritage.
A major attraction of the evening was “Nrityagiti,” a dance-music tableau directed by renowned artists Shamim Ara Nipa and Shibli Mohammad of Nrityanchal. The performance presented a creative synthesis of the musical and philosophical legacy of Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam. During this segment, the artists performed group dances set to 14 popular songs by Rabindranath and Nazrul.
The event featured Cultural Affairs Minister H.E Nitai Roy Chowdhury, MP as the Chief guest. Presided over by Professor Niranjan Adhikari, the discussion session featured presentations by Professor Dr. Tarik Manzur, Dhaka University and Professor Ahmed Reza from Jahangirnagar University.
The event also featured an exhibition of portraits of Rabindranath and Nazrul, drawn by over a hundred students from 13 schools across Dhaka, and its surrounding areas. At the conclusion of the programme, certificates of recognition were presented to the participating young artists.

ভারপ্রাপ্ত হাই কমিশনার (এএইচসি) পাওয়ানকুমার বঢ়ে ১৪ মে ২০২৬-এ বিশিষ্ট কবি রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর ও কাজী নজরুল ইসলামের জন্মবার্ষিকী উপলক্ষ্যে বাংলাদেশ জাতীয় জাদুঘরে আয়োজিত একটি অনুষ্ঠানে বক্তব্য প্রদান করেন। এই অনুষ্ঠানটি ইন্দিরা গান্ধী সংস্কৃতি কেন্দ্র (আইজিসিসি) ঢাকা, কালচারাল স্কুল তপোবন, নৃত্যাঞ্চল ও বহুমাত্রিক ডটকমের সহযোগিতায় ইতিহাস ও ঐতিহ্য পরিষদ কর্তৃক আয়োজন করা হয়।
এই অনুষ্ঠানে বক্তব্য প্রদানকালে, ভারপ্রাপ্ত হাই কমিশনার পাওয়ানকুমার বঢ়ে বলেন, এই দুই অসামান্য কবি ভারত ও বাংলাদেশ উভয় দেশের মানুষের হৃদয়ে সমানভাবে ও গভীরভাবে বেঁচে রয়েছেন। ভারপ্রাপ্ত হাই কমিশনার তাৎপর্যপূর্ণভাবে উল্লেখ করেন, রবীন্দ্রনাথ ও নজরুলের প্রতি প্রদর্শিত নিরন্তর ভালোবাসা ও শ্রদ্ধা আমাদের অভিন্ন সাংস্কৃতিক পরম্পরার অন্যতম শক্তিশালী প্রতীক হিসেবে বিদ্যমান রয়েছে।
এই সন্ধ্যার অন্যতম প্রধান আকর্ষণ ছিল নৃত্যাঞ্চলের প্রখ্যাত শিল্পী শামীম আরা নীপা ও শিবলী মোহাম্মদের নির্দেশনায় পরিবেশিত নৃত্য-সঙ্গীতনির্ভর মূকনাট্য (ট্যাবলো) “নৃত্যগীতি”। এই পরিবেশনাটি রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর ও কাজী নজরুল ইসলামের সঙ্গীত ও দর্শনবিষয়ক ঐতিহ্যের এক সৃজনশীল সমন্বয়কে উপস্থাপন করে। এই পর্বটি চলাকালে, শিল্পীগণ রবীন্দ্রনাথ ও নজরুলের ১৪টি জনপ্রিয় গানের সঙ্গে দলীয় নৃত্য পরিবেশন করেন।
অনুষ্ঠানটিতে প্রধান অতিথি হিসেবে উপস্থিত ছিলেন সংস্কৃতিবিষয়ক মাননীয় মন্ত্রী জনাব নিতাই রায় চৌধুরী, এমপি। অধ্যাপক নিরঞ্জন অধিকারীর সভাপতিত্বে অনুষ্ঠিত আলোচনা পর্বে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অধ্যাপক ড. তারিক মনজুর এবং জাহাঙ্গীরনগর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অধ্যাপক আহমেদ রেজার উপস্থাপনাও অন্তর্ভুক্ত ছিলো।
এই অনুষ্ঠানে ঢাকা ও এর পার্শ্ববর্তী এলাকাসমূহের ১৩টি বিদ্যালয়ের শতাধিক শিক্ষার্থীর আঁকা রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর ও কাজী নজরুল ইসলামের প্রতিকৃতির একটি চিত্রকর্ম প্রদর্শনী আয়োজন করা হয়। অনুষ্ঠানের পরিসমাপ্তিতে, অংশগ্রহণকারী নবীন শিল্পীদেরকে সম্মাননা সনদ প্রদান করা হয়।

High Commission of India hosted an interaction with a Bangladeshi media delegation on 10 May 2026, following their visit to India from 3-9 May 2026 as part of a special training programme arranged by the Government of India.
During the session, Deputy High Commissioner Pawankumar Badhe reviewed the visit of the media delegation, which comprised of members of Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) and journalists who cover economic and diplomatic affairs.
During the visit in New Delhi and Mumbai, the delegation interacted with senior government leaders, think tanks, media persons, business chambers and technology experts.
The visit of the media delegation is part of the long-standing tradition of capacity-building and exchange initiatives between India and Bangladesh, aimed at fostering people-to-people contacts between the two countries.

ভারত সরকার কর্তৃক আয়োজিত একটি বিশেষ প্রশিক্ষণ কর্মসূচির অংশ হিসেবে ৩-৯ মে ২০২৬ পর্যন্ত একটি বাংলাদেশি গণমাধ্যম প্রতিনিধিদলের ভারত সফরের পর, ১০ মে ২০২৬-এ ভারতীয় হাই কমিশন তাঁদের সঙ্গে একটি মতবিনিময় সভার আয়োজন করে।
এই অনুষ্ঠান চলাকালে, ডেপুটি হাই কমিশনার শ্রী পাওয়ানকুমার বঢ়ে ডিপ্লোম্যাটিক করেসপন্ডেন্টস অ্যাসোসিয়েশন, বাংলাদেশ (ডিক্যাব)-এর সদস্যগণ এবং অর্থনৈতিক ও কূটনৈতিক বিষয়াবলি নিয়ে প্রতিবেদন করা সাংবাদিকবৃন্দকে নিয়ে গঠিত গণমাধ্যম প্রতিনিধিদলটির সফর পর্যালোচনা করেন।
