RITES, a Navratna CPSE under Ministry of Railways, Govt. of India, has signed a contract on 20 May 2024 to supply 200 Broad Gauge passenger coaches to Bangladesh Railway. The ceremony was held at Rail Bhabhan in the presence of Minister of Railways, Bangladesh, Md. Zillul Hakim and Additional Member, PU, Ministry of Railways, India, Mr. Sanjay Kumar Pankaj. These coaches will be manufactured at Indian Railways’ Production Unit, Rail Coach Factory, at Kapurthala. The partnership is in line with the ‘Make in India, for the World’ initiative and aims at fostering growth through the exports of rolling stock manufactured at Indian Railways’ production units. At the ceremony, Bangladesh Railway Secretary Humayun Kabir highlighted the recent establishment of rail connectivity in the southern part of Bangladesh, noting that these coaches will augment rail capacity and communication between the southern districts and Dhaka, thereby improving passenger services. The project has been financed by the Government of Bangladesh and the European Investment Bank (EIB). The stainless steel, high-speed coaches will feature eco-friendly designs. With this new contract, the capacity and operation efficiency of Bangladesh Railway will be enhanced, taking forward the spirit of cooperation and commitment in augmenting rail infrastructure and bilateral ties in line with the ‘Neighborhood first’ policy of Government of India.
