Indian High Commission organized “Nazrul Sandhya”

IGCC, Indian High Commission organized “Nazrul Sandhya” to mark the 49th Death Anniversary of Kobi Kazi Nazrul Islam High Commission of India in Dhaka, through it’s cultural centre Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC), organized a soul-stirring cultural evening titled “Nazrul Sandhya” on Thursday, 28 August 2025, at the ICC, Gulshan, to commemorate the 49th death anniversary of Kobi Kazi Nazrul Islam. The event attracted a large gathering, including eminent artistes, cultural dignitaries, Nazrul scholars, youth delegates and art lovers, who together paid homage to the timeless genius of the “Bidrohi Kobi.” Addressing the gathering, High Commissioner Pranay Verma reflected on the multifaceted legacy of Kazi Nazrul Islam. He described Nazrul as “an icon of the shared cultural connection between India and Bangladesh." Recollecting the contribution of Nazrul to the freedom struggle of India, he said, "His poems stirred a subjugated nation, awakened its soul and inspired an entire country to break free of the chains of colonial oppression." Further elaborating on real relevance of Nazrul's poems today, he remarked, "He is an ardent symbol of youthfulness, whose appeal for inclusive, plural humanism transcends national boundaries. He said that Nazrul is a philosopher whose message of equality and harmony continues to inspire the world. “He is a lighthouse of our collective conscience", he said. Ms. Ann Mary George, Director of IGCC, in her welcome address, underlined the enduring cultural bonds between India and Bangladesh. She emphasized IGCC’s role as a vibrant hub for cultural exchange and dialogue, reaffirming its commitment to celebrating the legacies of literary and artistic figures like Kazi Nazrul Islam, who have shaped the region’s shared cultural heritage. The highlight of the evening was the mesmerizing performances by two of the most acclaimed exponents of Nazrul Sangeet — Dr. Chanda Chakraborty and Mr. Shahid Kabir Polash. Their passionate renditions of Nazrul’s iconic songs — ranging from Bidrohi’s fiery verses to the lyrical beauty of devotional and romantic compositions — left the audience deeply moved, reaffirming the timelessness of Nazrul’s art. Dr. Chanda Chakraborty, is a celebrated artiste and scholar, who has been honored with numerous awards, including the National Nazrul Samaj Padak (2009) and Channel i Best Performance in Nazrul Sangeet (2018). Shahid Kabir Polash is also a notable Nazrul artist and has been bestowed with multiple honors, including the Citycell-Channel i Music Award (2010). The evening was a solemn musical tribute to Nazrul Islam (1899–1976) — poet, musician, freedom fighter, and philosopher. Known as the Rebel Poet, Nazrul’s writings championed freedom, equality, and communal harmony, igniting the spirit of resistance against colonial rule and inspiring generations. His unparalleled contribution to Bengali literature and music remains a source of pride for both Bangladesh and India, symbolizing the shared cultural heritage of the two nations
