A four-day exposition of Bangladesh’s rich saree-weaving traditions got off at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi this evening. Welcomed by Bangladesh High Commissioner to India, M Riaz Hamidullah, renowned designer Padma Shri Ms Sunita Kolhi, and designer, writer, and craft activist Padma Shri Ms. Laila Tyabji, shared their reflections on stage. The Co-curators- Chandrasekhar Bheda (India) and Chandrasekhar Saha (Bangladesh) elaborated the concept behind the initiative. The exposition will offer #textile enthusiasts in India a rare glimpse into the diversity and craftsmanship of Bangladesh’s celebrated weaves.
The finest pieces of Bangladeshi handloom/Sarees from the master weavers of two traditional handloom hubs- districts of Tangail and Pabna in Bangladesh are brought in. The Exposition aims to showcase the intricacies of an intangible cultural heritage from deltaic Bangladesh that gained a universal recognition last December 2025 from UNESCO.
Two national award-winning saree weavers, from the Basak family (Tangail) and Mohammad Sajeeb (Naranganj) - each with two decades’ credential in saree-weaving, joined from Bangladesh to demonstrate the intricate weaving process on site.
The exposition remains open for public viewing from 18 to 21 April at the Bangladesh High Commission, New Delhi.
